Becoming a successful salon owner can be challenging, not to mention stressful. But if opening a salon is your dream, don’t let anything or anyone hold you back. As you embark onto this journey here a few qualities that you will need to embody along the way.

Organization

As a salon owner, you are more than just an entrepreneur. You will have to juggle many tasks from your clients to your team to your finances. It can be difficult to manage all of this on top of your personal life. Being an organized individual will set you up for success. Find an organizational system that works for both you and your staff and stick with it.

Motivation

Having drive or being a self-starter will launch your business into success. Being your own boss, you don’t have a million people telling you what to do and when to do it. It is up to you to complete your to-do lists, no one else.Yes, there may be some tasks that you won’t want to do, but with the right motivation you will be able to accomplish anything.  Here is one of my favorite ways to tackle a project. Break down larger tasks and commit to work on it for 15 minutes a day for 30 days. By the end of the 30 days you will have it done. Just remember the old saying, “How do you eat an elephant, “one bite at a time.”

Independence

There will be plenty of people who will tell you that you are making a mistake in starting a business or give you unwarranted advice. Whether your family and friends’ feedback is positive or negative, you need to remain true to yourself and the salon’s vision. Having a clear idea for your business and a road map to get there will keep you on track and independent from other people’s opinions.

Delegation

Unfortunately, you can’t be everywhere at one time and accomplish every task. As a salon owner you need to be able to delegate tasks to your team. It might be hard to let go of control, but delegating tasks to your team helps you regain something very valuable—time. Make sure when you delegate, you make your expectations clear. Have trust in your team and give them feedback, then they will get the job done right and even come up with a few great ideas along the way too!

Resilience

To come full circle, becoming a business owner is a journey that is filled with ups and downs. There will be days that you questions your choices, and there will be other days where you feel on top of the world. Through it all, you have to stay resilience. Keep in mind that the bad days will pass and the promise of tomorrow can bring something wonderful.
